Day 5 (Mon Nov. 14): ANGKOR WAT. This morning, you’ll explore the more distant ruins of Angkor Wat with your English-speaking guide. We recommend: TA PROHM, constructed as a Buddhist monastery located in a quiet, sprawling jungle. Parrots flit from tree to tree adding to the jungle atmosphere. Massive trees grow from stone towers and make for dramatic photos. BAKONG TEMPLE, the most impressive temple-mountain from the 9th century. BANTEAY KDEI jungle temple, constructed as a Buddhist monastery in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. BANTEAY SAMRE, constructed around the same time as Angkor Wat with similar style and Hindu carvings in excellent condition. BANTREY SREY is considered to display some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art. The walls are densely covered with some of the most beautiful and intricate carvings of any Angkorian temple. PHNOM BAKHENG temple mountain, the first major temple to be constructed in the Angkor area. The foundation of Bakheng’s hilltop location makes it the most popular sunset location in the area, offering a view of the Tonle Sap Lake and a distant Angkor Wat in the jungle. Elephant rides up the hill are available ($15 pp). PHNOM KROM with its three towers and active pagoda, located on top of a mountain overlooking Tonle Sap lake and the surrounding countryside. If the group is interested, we’ll also visit a local orphanage to see traditional “Apsara” dance and a local childrens hospital. Day 5 meals: (B)
